If you are unsure about the requirements of the Writing Sub-test, you should go to 'General Information' icon on the home page to review information about:
- a general introduction to the test
- the OET assessment criteria for the sub-test
- useful strategies for when you sit the sub-test
- an analysis of sample case notes and letter
IF YOU ARE READY TO BEGIN 'WRITING' PRACTICE 1, read through the following instructions and then complete each of the tasks.
There are two parts to any writing task:
- planning the content for the writing based on the particular audience and their needs and then
- writing the letter with attention to accuracy of expression to ensure the meaning is clear.
These two parts of writing are included in each of the practice tests.
PART 1: Analysing the writing task and planning the letter:
a. Open up Writing Task 1 (Close this window to see the link for Task 1)
b. Read the case notes for the task and note the instructions for the writing task.
c. Analyse and plan (in writing) your response to the writing task - either using the model described in the preparatory materials, or your own preferred method.
d. Compare your analysis and plan to the Case Notes Analysis provided here. (Close this window to see the link for this analysis)
PART 2: Writing the letter and submitting it for assessment:
a. Based on your analysis of the question and the resulting plan, write the letter making sure you follow the guidelines provided in preparatory materials. Use Word and save the assignment to your computer or disk. (In the actual OET writing sub-test, you will be given 40 minutes to write your letter by hand. To get a more accurate sense of the actual writing sub-test, we recommend that you set yourself 40 minutes to write the letter by hand before creating a Word document to send.)
b. On the main Practice 1 page (the one you see when you close this window), click on 'Submit Work'. Make sure you attach your Word document and click the submit button at the bottom of the page. You can add a comment for your instructor if you wish.
If you get confused, use the 'Help' link at the top right of your screen. It is context-sensitive, so if you are in the Assignments section, it will guide you through the process of submitting the assignment to your instructor.
